About

I'm Robert Buchanan, a nature, nostalgia and process driven artist based in Folkestone, Kent.

My work is built around lived experience. I don't work from stock images or reference libraries, every piece starts with time spent outdoors, camera in hand, paying attention. The photograph, the composition, the drawing, the printing, all of it is done by me, from start to finish. That matters to me. It means that by the time a piece reaches you, it carries the full weight of the experience that created it.

I came to art seriously about five years ago, after a long career as a ski instructor. It wasn't a clean pivot, life rarely is, but somewhere in the slower moments that followed, I found my way back to making things by hand. I haven't looked back.

The work sits at the intersection of nature, nostalgia, and process. I'm drawn to subjects that ask you to slow down. And I'm drawn to the methods that demand the same from me. Charcoal, graphite, mezzotint, cyanotype. Analog processes with long histories and no shortcuts.

There's something about working with your hands that keeps you honest. You have to commit. And I think that commitment shows up in the finished piece in ways that are hard to explain but easy to feel.

Each work I make is a limited edition or original, never open edition, never mass produced. If something leaves my studio, it's because I'm proud of it.
