The wax palms of Colombia's Cocora Valley are the tallest palm trees in the world, reaching up to 60 metres. But for the first 15 years of their life, they barely grow at all above ground, putting everything into their roots, building the foundation that will eventually support their height and age.
These two mezzotints were made to capture something that photographs rarely do justice to, the way the palms in the Cocora Valley seem to materialise out of the cloud rather than stand in front of it.
At altitude, the valley sits in near-permanent mist, and the palms emerge from it slowly.
Mezzotint is one of the few printmaking processes that works from dark to light, and it's that quality that makes it the right fit for this subject. The technique produces edges that are naturally soft and gradual, there are no hard lines here. The palms don't cut against the background, they grow out of it, which is exactly how it felt standing there when we visited on our honeymoon in January of 2026.
Each print is framed in a charcoal frame with a black mount, which reinforces that atmosphere rather than fighting it. I use anti-reflective and UV protective glass and they arrive ready to hang with a certificate of authenticity and fixings on the back.
